International SEO: How to Rank Your Website in the USA, UK, Canada and Australia

If you sell to customers in more than one country, international SEO helps Google show the right page to the right audience — the right language, currency and contact details. Here is how to set it up properly.

1. Choose your structure

  • Country domains (example.co.uk, example.com.au) — strongest local signal, but each domain builds authority separately.
  • Subfolders (example.com/uk/, example.com/au/) — share one domain's authority; often the best balance for growing businesses.
  • One global site — fine when the offer is the same everywhere; use country landing pages for local intent.

2. Use hreflang correctly

Hreflang tags tell Google which version of a page targets which language and region, for example en-us, en-gb, en-ca and en-au. Every version should reference all the others, including itself.

3. Localise, don't just translate

  • Spelling and vocabulary (color/colour), currency and units.
  • Local proof — clients, case studies and reviews from that market.
  • Local contact options and time-zone-friendly support hours.
  • Prices and offers that make sense in that country.

4. Create country landing pages

A strong page for each target country explains how you serve that market. See how we approach this on our pages for the USA, UK, Canada and Australia, and our international website development page.

5. Build local authority

Links and mentions from websites in each country — industry associations, local media, partners and directories — help you rank there.

6. Get the technical basics right

  • Fast hosting with a CDN for global visitors.
  • A clean XML sitemap including every country version.
  • Correct canonical tags so versions don't compete.
  • Search Console set up and monitored for each target.

Our SEO services cover international setups for businesses targeting several countries.

A worked example

Imagine a Shopify brand selling in the USA, UK and Australia from one store. A clean setup might use example.com for the USA, example.com/uk/ and example.com/au/ for the other markets, each with local prices, shipping information and spelling, linked with hreflang. Each market gets its own collection descriptions and a few market-specific guides, and earns links from websites in that country.

Common mistakes

  • Automatic redirects based on IP address that stop Google crawling other versions.
  • Copying the same content to every country version without localising.
  • Missing or one-directional hreflang tags.
  • Ignoring local links and reviews in each market.

Measuring international SEO

In Search Console, filter performance by country to see impressions, clicks and positions for each market. Track conversions by country in analytics, and prioritise the markets where you already gain traction.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a separate website for each country?

Not necessarily. Subfolders on one domain with hreflang tags are often the best balance of local relevance and shared authority.

What is hreflang?

An HTML or sitemap annotation that tells Google which language and region each version of a page is for.

Does currency affect SEO?

Indirectly — showing local currency improves user experience and conversions, which supports your overall performance in that market.
